| Added: 2011-01-01A large tree with rather plump buds. Near Cambridge, in the Puslinch Resource Management Area. I haven't been back in the spring or summer to see what it is.
Suggestions
I believe this tree, is Ulmus pumila, more commonly known as Siberian Elm. These trees commonly escape cultivation in southern Ontario (especially near where I live, the Burlington and Hamilton area) and can be a real nuisance! Those distinct round, fat purple buds contain what will be the flowers in spring, and are a key I.D. feature to differentiate it from other Elms. (TN)
